Extremely hard place to get to these days. No one comes here now!! Hi Phill, are these subways at the end of the viaduct on land now behind the Lexus garages? Maybe a bit further on round as the railway follows it's course paralell to Gelderd road?

One of the tunnels is in the centre of this image:http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.78588 ... src=gglThe other is just up to the right. There's lots of pictures of the goit on leodis. Most of it was backfilled at some point. I think the original course was diverted underground as the beck which feeds it is still there and the water must go somewhere (currently it disappears as it burrows under the M621). One for Leeds' subterraenean minature canoe expedition team to explore!

We used to play football and cricket on it now and again (we usually played on Royds Field now the site of the flash motor dealers (Masserati and the like on Leeds Ring Road). It eventually became a sports field for the TocH society (as in "dim as a TocH lamp") before it was built on but I can never remember it being called Turnkey Park?Far Royds was always known as the other end of Royds Lane where it was taken over by the new Ring Road on its way to Churwell. Th reason why it is still cobbled is it is a private road and has not been adopted by LCC - I used to p*** off the local plod by driving on it before I was 17.With regard to The Lemmi - I can remember it well but it was all but in disuse then. My Dad used to play soccer there in the 1930's and told me stories of huge crowds for games where as a small boy he had to be sat on adults shoulders to watch. The standard was supposedly very high and the quality of thr pitch diabloical with lots of cinders.

OK JJ!Thanks 4 that.Had another skeg at that bit and I think now, that Turnkey Park is the name of a single street off Royds Lane. Across the lane is Royds Close ,another single street, alongside Wortley Beck.(I told you, this A-Z is dated 1966!)Do you remember the 'Ups and Downs' on the corner of Gelderd Rd-Ring Rd? Just across from the Wheatsheaf pub! It was a grand Safe(ish) place to do stunts on your bike, being careful not to slide into the stagnant pools at the bottom of each circular cinder track!I think the Electricity Board built on it and spoiled a smashing Free Leisure Park and cycle tester! My Wigfall's Royal stood up well, even to getting dunked in the pondweed along with ME!It was so quiet in those days, that area (until our 'Tour de Tusky fields' team arrived!)Amazing the things that come back to you in a website like this one!Happy memories!Talking of TocH Lamps-guess you were in the mob at one time?CheersArry

Great site this, I have enjoyed such a journey down memory lane you should all be knighted!!!I remember walking along Whitehall Road has a child and there was a snicket somewhere along the road that led to the park - has you walked along and up the snicket you could see the back of the cattle market. This is probably the wrong thread, but, on Geldard Road at the top off one of the Oswald's there was the Church of Nazareth, where I went from the age of 5(ish), Sunday School, until I was around 14. Does anyone else remember or attend during the 60's? Did you belong to the Young Crusaders?BT

One opposite the back of the cattle market and t'other further up near the Dragon pub. The one near the pub is dead straight and the same one I still use to walk to Elland Road of a sat! The one at the bottom ends up at a tin bridge over a dissused rail line (that used to go to Wortley station), Phild has some cracking piccies of it. Cross the tin bridge and your on the bottom end of the park!
