I've just been doing a bit of reading, and trying to find pictures of the original waterfall at the end of the lake, and found this:
http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... AY=FULLWhy on earth did they remove this, and when was it actually removed?I seem to remember the construction of the present drainage outfall was responsible for the lake being half full for so long?

If you search the other threads on Roundhay Doggers, you'll find (evenventually!) a great deal on this topic. In a nutshell, the lake had to comply with EU regulations and arrangements made to deal with the 1 in a 1000 year (I think it was) flood. This necessiatated constructing a new outflow and bypass for flood water which is what you see there today,Phil has a set on flickr showing the results from the 'inside'!

Absolutely, avoiding the catastrophic failure of the dam and the sudden emptying of the lake in the manner of the dambusters is such a stupid thing to do
