SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

A public access path that passes Greystone Pasture enters a wood and continues on the left just after going over a bridge. The object can fairly soon be seen (particularly when there is little growth in the wood) on the right as you approach the Emmerdale Village set area off to the left of the path. Unfortunately it is illegal to enter the area where the object is, but the part of it that can be seen from the path has a short but steep slope. Its intriguing shape cannot be seen from the path.I was not sure where to post this, as being in a non-public access area it may not strictly qualify for the 'Parks, fields and Woods' of Leeds thread. I apologise if I should not have posted it in this thread. It is in the Leeds area though. Thanks for any information or suggestions.

It's marked on an 1850s map as a sandstone quarry. It's shown as a wooded area on an 1890s map, and by the 1900s it's labelled "old quarry".It's interesting to see these remains on Google Maps - I've walked that route through the woods a couple of times but never noticed it! Edited to add: I've just realised that our Secret Leeds avatars make it look like two cats having a conversation!

I never thought to try the old maps as I just assumed it would be modern(ish). I've seen the part that can be seen from the path for a few years now, but it was not until I very recently saw it on a Google Map view that I found out its shape.We clearly both like cats, or at least a cat avatar. That may make them a purrsonal favourite of ours.

It surprised me that it was a quarry, as it looks more like a filled-in crater from the air. I thought quarries tended to be hacked out of the sides of hills rather than dug into the ground.
