Ever since I warra a kid there's bin 3 stone blocks on Armley Park. As far as I can remember they're about 2 foot square but they are not just sat on top of the grass, they must be sunk in. Does anyone know what they were for?

It's not the only place Chris. Harehills park has the very same stone blocks. I'll upload a Google image later (no time at present) There either side of the swings, near the underground water storage. The last time the gang moved a huge stone like that, a nice manhole cover was underneath, leading to a hidden place lower down. I'm just wondering.. LOL. They don't just put random boulders in the middle of parks for no reason.

Yes i did get time The picture is here if one of the nice guys wants to put it on S.L for mehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/441033 ... etleedsThe two stone blocks are marked in the boxes. There is also a strange 'planted area' stuck in the middle of the grass. It's very out of keeping, i've marked it with an X. It doesn't look right. There's huge boulders mixed in there. You can see it's close to the underwater storage tank.

I'll have a look. These service reservoirs have probably been rebuilt three or four times in their lifetime. I wonder if the blocks are left over masonary from previous incarnations?

They could be from the second world war, I recall seeing something very similar on Time Team when they were doing a dig in a park in London and it included the sunken gun emplacements and the large concrete blocks were for Barrage Balloons.I could however be completely wrongAnyway have a look athttp://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/T/t ... index.html

Barrage balloon it might be as there's an air raid shelter about where the red box is.

When I was a kid we were told the ones in Harehills Park were "orators stones" but I was never entirely convinced.
Daft I call it - What's for tea Ma?
