Running North- South along what is commonly called "The Soldiers Field" but is marked on the O.S. Explorer map as "Military Field" is a mystery road.The Road is Connaught Road, and the correct name for the field is ...Connaught Field.The road has all but disappeared over time but can be seen when the grass dries out.So what is the correct history of this mystery road?Enclosed is a copy of map circa 1900 showing the road marked in green.Also the road as it is today:

It's funny you bring this up Brunel.It's not quite as dissapeared as you think.I've walked past it countless times and never given it a second thought.I only took more notice two days ago when i went for my snap of the Roundhay shelter.If you go to the corner of Old Park road (Gledow lane side) where the road started, you can still see the original kerb stones and road sets of the road. It stops when it hits the grass.(It only seems a narrow road, one vehicle wide)I just assumed it was an access for grass cutters e.t.c.I never knew it was a full named road.

I presume these cobble remains will be the very same Connaught road then?

You can see the complete line of it on Google Maps, which must be approx. 4 yrs. ago.

I always thought Soldiers Field was the other side of Prince's Ave.

but then vanishes on the 1938 map??So................................WHY? lolps/when i say 'vinishes; i mean it appears on the map marked as 'connaught road'but if you look at the map at the end the opening of the road is blocked?

I think this was part of the service roads accross the park when it was in private hands. Imagine this was more or less near to the eastern most boundry of the park and was apparently just an access road....Why it is still showing later on on the maps is an entirely different story.
