Looks as though it was clay for the nearby brickworks Geordie.

It's not this one is it? "No date. Claypit with tramway coming in from centre bottom. Roundhay Road is running parallel with Chapeltown Barracks towards right centre. In between the two roads are the Enfield, Grant and Badminton streets. Roundhay Road Council School fronts the main road."http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL

Gosh thanks for all the replies. I don't think anyone's quite got a handle on this one. The photo with Roundhay Road at the bottom is too far north. Not sure how to link to Google maps but this is the area between Dolly Lane and Lincoln Road: http://tinyurl.com/6zl3xg

I'll bet it's not you know, the big road in the middle is Roseville Road, not Roundhay, which was what I though when I first looked at it. If you look on your goole image map, it's only the other side of Dolly Lane so i reakon it was all part of the same quarry based on where your green arrow is (could be totally wrong but heigh ho!)
