The "ups and downs"

Hello again 'arry.Just been looking at an ariel photo on Leodis taken in 1962 and someone on there refers to our Beeston Bumps as the Milky Way!Thats another name to conjure with! I dont know how to upload the picture onto this thread but the subject I.D. is 20031030_10387820. One of the people amongst the 31 who commented on the photo said that despatch riders were trained to ride the bumps during WW2! Another points out the Bumps on the photo but I cant make out wether it is the Bumps that I rode when I was young or some other ups and downs as others called them.SD

I wonder if the Milky Way name came about through the colour of the water in the depressions between the "bumps". It was always milky white due, I presume, to the powdered render of the grey shale composition of the mine "arisings" that formed the mounds.

Think I might have the answer re the Milky Way!I seem to recall a fairground ride being called the Milky Way.with the 'cars' going round on an undulating platform in an'UP and Down' Motion. in a similar fashion to the 'Speedway' motorbikes and 'Cocks and hens' (as the ride was called).Could be that riding your bike round the Ups and downswas similar to the Milky way? The only difference being that you provided your own power instead of sitting back in a seathoping you weren't going to 'throw up' the candy floss you'dscoffed before getting aboard!

While walking in Eccup Whin wood yesterday (Sept 22) I noticed there were quite a number of mounds of earth each several feet high. They looked very much like those you see for such use as rough bike riding and were in a line (more or less). Most of them had a green protective material over part. If they are meant for riding over they do though seem to be in a very isolated area. They are near to the King Lane end of the wood. They were not there when I was last in the wood a couple of years back.
