me and some friends came across this place last year whilst looking for somewher to build a large set of BMX jumps.it looks like it used to be an old councill park with picnic area etc. but has been blocked off now.when you go into the woods (to ride our jumps) you see loads of condoms an empty condom wrappers and stuff, and we have been told its now a well known gay dogging spot.but does anyone know why this place is here and why it got shut down and blocked off?

It's exactly as you said. Just an old park where families used to go to have a picnic etc.. It's been blocked off as "doggers" were taking their cars into the woods and off the road also about 8 years ago gypsys moved in for a while. Tis like owt nowadays, if theres a spare bit of accesable grass going free, someone will stick a caravan on it. It made the paper a few years back because of the amount of people who were visiting on a night and it wasn't a picnic there were going for!

Is that the one just of Wakefield Road near a well known farm?Another picnic area was constructed on the edge of TempleNewsam off Bullerthorpe lane around 30 years ago - closed for the last 20 as I recall - same problems. Shame we all suffer through the lack of respect and absence of social conscience of some, it was quite pleasant there.

I used to spend a lot of time at Astley Riding Centre - am I thinking of the right area? I remember 'travellers' setting up camp near there around 10 years ago.

Hi Croggy, Its not as far a the riding centre, it at the junction of Whitehouse Lane and Wakefield Road on what was Mount Pleasant Pit.
