I have a vague memory of reading that Leodis was the name of a Romano-Celtic god. I think this is probably a fanciful notion - I believe it was in one of those turn of the century Yorkshire histories by someone like Harry Speight. But does anyone have a better source for the name? FWIW, William Camden gives the Anglo-Saxon name as Loytes http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/text/ ... en&c_id=25

The Domesday book (1085) refers to Leeds as Ledes and was in the keep of Ilbert De Lacy as were the surrounding districts ie bestone, fernelei and Bramelei. Ledes was briefly described as having a mill and a church. Most of the north was laid waste by William in 1069.

back to the thread now GIRLS!!! if you google Loidis it comes up with all sorts of info! Loidis was basically a sub-division of the kingdom of Elmete NOT an actual town/village!

Sorry to intrude on private grief but what about the term LeodIensian? Or is that solely the preserve of sports clubs?
