For those who love steam hauled trains, today marked the start of the 2012 season of specials running through Leeds. The "Scarborough Spa Express" will run every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from now until Sept.6. It runs from York via Church Fenton, Normanton, Wakefield Kirkgate and Westgate, Whitehall Junction (railway bridge over Whitehall Road Leeds just south of the River Aire), Woodlesford, Castleford, Church Fenton, York, and Scarborough.Note that the train does not pass through Leeds City Station as it takes the west side of the Holbeck triangle thus avoiding the station itself. The evening return train runs round the York-Wakefield-York loop in the same direction as the morning train, not its reverse.Passing times at Whitehall Junction are 11.42 and 19.45. Rostered locomotives are a selection of Black Fives and Royal Scot 46115 "Scots Guardsman", which was at the head of today's train. The "Waverley" will run every Sunday until Sept 9 (except Aug 19, which has been cancelled) from York to Carlisle via Leeds City, where it is timetabled to stop at 09.47 and 19.45 return. Locomotives will be taken from the same pool as the Scarborough trains

Thanks for the update, although this years selection of motive power is not over inspiring is it?Think how magnificent an A4 would look at the head of the train!

Managed to nip over to see todays 'Spa' return, before I went over to meet up for the Club-Run.Felt slight at odds standing with the (serious) spotters in (running)shorts & Sauconys (shoes)Got a few pics, will see if there's anything worthwhile.Overheard one kid asking his dad why were that mans shoes such a dirty-grey & not white like his.Think dad said something along the lines of "that man uses his, they're not just for fashion"

The Scarborough Flyer, Crewe - Scarborough also starts tomorrow (20th) whilst it doesn't touch Leeds, it travels through West Yorkshire from Castleford to Hebden Bridge via Wakefield and Mirfield. At Wakefield Kirkgate at 19-30.
