SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

As a young child, my grand mother who lived in the Bayswaters told me of an airship that flew over Leeds a couple of times in the 1930'sMy question is what was the airship ? Was it a German airship or and english one ?I will look at records to see if I can find out any info on this.ThanksBlue Max

At a guess I would say it could have been the Hindenburg on one of it's trips to the USA.I seem to remember hearing somewhere about the Hindenburg passing over Leeds elsewhere but I could easily be mistaken.

My mam told me she saw it and everyone’s opinion was it was doing reconnaissance work for the coming war.

My uncle remembers seeing the Hindenburg over Leeds in the 1930's. He and my late father were 10 and 7 respectively at the time and were sent on an errand to the local shop on Hunslet Road. When they arrived at the shop the two young lads were captivated by the sight of an ox and cart delivering goods from the suet pudding people Atora, while standing admiring the great beast they heard a droneing noise above them and looked up to see the giant airship quite low in the sky. It came to light after the war that the Hindenburg had taken photos of the Hunslet Goods Yard and he often wonders if that is what it was doing on that day all those years ago.Regards.

I wasnt even born til the 70s, but I recall in the 1990s seeing that Good Year tyres airship (or blimp as they say on The Simpsons!) over Headingley Cricket Ground when the test match was on. I think they used to film aerial tv shots from it. Its a shame we dont have airships that often. Apparently there are some very modern designed ones that use helium, I'd love to go on a trip in one.

There's an earlier theread on this topic LeedsBlimp/Airship with quite a bit of information about the 1930's zeppelin flights over Leeds. My mother remembered seeing it flying over Harehills when she was a teenager.
