If the links are borked, they're metal strips surrounded by concrete which run at right angles across the road. The images are on Vicar Lane and Cookridge Street but am sure they exist elsewhere. They don't look ancient but certainly don't look new either, the concrete around most of them is shagged and if you view the latter link, looks like something sticking out of it on the right.

If I am assuming correctly what you are referring to I think they are detectors that record if and how much traffic is moving over them so that the nearby traffic lights can be controlled better.As for the thing sticking out on the right I only see a pigeon!

They apear to be the older type of sensor employed to generate traffic presence/flow information to the control unit of any adjacent traffic lights.Rubber strips set in metal holders mounted in a long narrow band of concrete?

Yep that's what they look like. About as dull as I was expecting then! The modern ones are just laid into cuts in the tarmac and covered with rubbery tar stuff aren't they? I wonder if these old ones are still in use or just left as they're awkward to remove.

I would imagine they have simply been left in place as it would be easier than removing them and filling the hole in - probably be removed whenever that stretch is due to be re-surfaced.Notice the taxi making an illegal manouver - thats a bus and cycle gate only, no mention of taxis LOL

Much as I hate to defend them, it is a taxi lane also. The blue signs next to the entrance show this.

Another thing for me to get mad about with them... (like when they park at the top of Albion St outside McDonalds but that's another story!)

Love or hate them, they both provide part of the 'public' transport service which we are encouraged to use instead of private cars - there is a case to argue perhaps.
