Came across this thread whilst looking the the 'My Threads' facility.As before there is not much to offer locally but there is an excellent 20 minute film 'This is York 1953'http://www.britishrailways.tv/british-r ... o_id=1279A must for anyone with an interest in BR before 'modernisation'in the late 50's-early 60's.Difficult to imagine BR had its own central laundry at Heworth which supplied the BR hotels and sleeping car linen.the wheeltapper at work,the 'lamp man' the then modernsignalbox which lasted until the IECC opened (90's?)A day in the life of the Station Master-complete with top hat !

As csnosi says i love all this old railway nostalgia stuff. I certainly wish i could go back in time with the camera to those days for sure And the railways did have pride in those days. Not only did they have there own laundry, but they had there own railway gardens. They supplied all the flowers for the station displays, and the fruit and vegetables for the railway hotels. There's an abandoned one near Leeds.
