Just thought i would warn anyone who uses the 2+ lane inbound on Stanningley road at rush hour. They were erecting a new camera at the bottom of the road, just before the traffic lights which sometimes work and control the 2+ lanes. it is not a standard gatso or Truvelo so me thinks it is not a speed camera but one which monitors the number of passengers in a car.Not that anyone on this board would flout road traffic laws

You are right, it is monitoring the number of people in passing cars, but it is currently only a trial to prove it is effective. I'm not entirely sure how the camera would pic up a small child in a car seat, for example. That said someone, somewhere is recording a photo with your face and registration details on, as well as your travelling habits. There was a piece in the YEP about it and apparently it isn't yet being used to issue penalty notices until the trial is sucessfully completed. There are cameras supposedly performing this function on the M606 2+ lane onto the M62 at jct 26, so I'm not entirely sure why another trial is needed in Leeds, unless it is a different type of technology? Mind you, the M606/M62 2+ lane is regularly and routinely abused, especially by foreign registered trucks despite it clearly stating "No HGVs", so I'm not sure how well they work or how rigourously it is enforced.

A camera is being developed (good old Leeds Uni doing there bit for society as I recall) which supposedly recognises blood flow through the skin of the face thus counting people and ignoring dummies - that's a phrase to attract comment!

It would be interesting to know how such a system copes with things like the heat reflective windscreens fitted to many cars nowadays, the specialist coatings on which prevent things like aftermarket satnavs working as they can't get a signal.

Don't know Davey, but I suspect it has a way - lot of money gone their way.

Are these the same tech bods who were repeatedly on Look North in the 1990's with their revolutionary new ambulance siren which incorporated white noise so you could "hear which direction it was coming from"? Essentially it was an ordinary siren, interspersed every 20 seconds or so with a blast of what sounded like static - nee - naw - shhhhh if you likeIf you'll pardon the pun, we don't hear of that wonderful invention any more do we?

Is it just me - you're driving along and suddenly your mind reacts to what could be an emergency vehicle - somewhere - we all know how quickly after that they can creep up on you - peering all around only to realise its part of the latest offering of entertainment on the radio or worse, included in an advertisement thereon. Doesn't help the safe driving does it?
