For years I've been puzzled as to what this windowless club in the sky would be like on the inside. Is it closed now?

Yes its windowless inside,the windows that are there on the first floor barely let out the cig smoke.The floor above had a dance floor and stage.Its all closed now,another nail in the coffin of BR.The only place where railway staff in the post privatisation era got to meet up and maintain links.

I could tell you a few stories from my days on the railway and some times spent in this establishment - and not all of them off duty either.It had a lovely snooker table in there and, given its strange location, the steward kept a pretty good pint as well.Theres many a time the phone rang behind the bar and it would be the station supervisor enquiring after a driver who was due out in a couple of minutes or a missing shunter (whistles innocently), it was on the internal phone network, perhaps a bit of fore thought there LOL.I well remember the day I had nipped up there for a quick light refreshment when things started to get a bit more smoky than usual (the days when you could smoke in doors), it turned out a parcel van we had put in plat 4 under the club was on fire and going quite well, the smoke was seeping in through the flor of the club which was made of concrete beams, several regulars just carried on drinking while coughing and spluttering away to themselves.After this it was closed for a while for re-furbishment and an agreement was reached with Yorkshire rider for us to use their staff club up at Saxton gardens in the meantime.

The small windows rather than letting cig smoke out limited the amount of diesel fumes coming in.Platform 4 didi not see a great number of trains but the adjacent pfm 5diesel HST's would stand for quite some time before returning to London.Had many a pint and toasty in there during my lunch break,you did not get the sack in those days for a swift one on duty.

I remember then, we used to sit try and sit in the cab until some shabby bloke smelling of beer chased us away and I remember that O8 shunter, lord what was it's number?    

that would be 08 590 mate - and if anyone ever remembers seeing it in the dirt at the throat of the P.C.D. one weekend well - that was down to me i'm afraid, momentary lapse in concentration - and not down to taking lunch in the subjectof this thread.
