Hi gang, does anyone know why the A643 link road (M621 to Armley Gyratory) goes through a shallow tunnel about here? http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 17Crossing Brown Lane, WortleyDoesn't look like there's much up there, judging from google maps

IIRC there's a school right next to the road there and the tunnel is to reduce noise.

I seem to remember that when this road was built in the 70's, the pupils & teachers of MR school organised a protest about the loss of playing fields. They were duly retained by building the tunnel and were thus put onto the top.

The strange thing is that although they built the tunnel it did not go deep enough and as a result Brown Lane was split in half and in effect became a no through road.
