I am very interested in the history of the railways in and around Leeds and I was wondering if any of the closed and disused railways still have the entrances to them, albeit sealed up.I have heard that the entrance to Holbeck Station is still visible but is bricked up if you know where to look... but how many more stations are like this? Is Marsh Lane (the Through Platforms) entrances still to be seen?

I think Phill posted a picture of the Holbeck entrance, ooh, well over a year ago - I think he may be able to offer you a few bits.

Ilkley station still has an old entrance bricked up - or to be more accurate "stoned up." It is in Railway Road almost opposite the large department store (Sunwin House, now Debenhams) When the station was in full swing in its heyday it had four platforms rather than the present two. Platforms 3 and 4 served the through line to Skipton and beyond (which crossed Brook Street on the now forgotten bridge ), and under those platforms and the line was a long white tiled pedestrian underpass which came out into Railway Road - the position of the exit is still clearly visible.

Hi Rob.Apparently the Marsh lane stairs still exist under the arches. The car repair place was most unhelpful. He seemed to be the rudest man i have ever come across.DON'T TAKE YOU CAR DOWN THERE.A pity that. If he had let me photograph it he'd have got some great publicity by now.Never mind. His loss. The platforms still exist above. I think csnosi might be able to tell you that as well.Drivers eye view e.t.c.Both Holbeck station entrance can still be seen. They can be seen on these pics herehttp://

Sorry to lower the tone here Phil but some of the Industial units don't have toilets so they use the underpass! a mate of mine had the unit directly opposite the entrance and we had to use it!!!

Thanks for the info... keep it coming.I work on the railways and I have often seen the platforms at Marsh Lane, although they are in a bit of a state now! I often wondered where the entrance to the station was and if it exists. Looks like there will be no chance of getting to see either!!I also head up to Ilkley quite often and knew about the through platforms and "forgotten bridge" but I didn't know about the underpass! Next time I have a break up there I might go and do some exploring lol

Next time I have a break up there I might go and do some exploring lol The station (passenger)was actually where the old concrete yard was/is,also the cutting between Marsh Lane junction and Neville Hill west junction was all tunnel, ive got it showing as such in the 1850 OS map, along with the original station on the concrete yard.Im pretty sure the platforms in place on the Hull line, around the footbridge, were for goods use.On the Quarry hill side of the line, immediately adjacent to the lineside, was a big warehouse that burnt down in the early seventies (saw it myself) and im sure that was the warehouse to which the platforms belonged.
