Long shot this but Its had me wondering all day, for about 3 hours this afternoon a large Helicopter has been flying around the South Leeds area the cloud base has been quite low today so it was drifting in and out of cloud. At first I thought it was a Puma as we have had a lot of those flying past of late but as I looked I realized if it was it had been on the steroids as it looked a lot more bulky than a Puma. Anyone who has read my previous posts will gather Im a bit of a aviation nut and I pride myself on my A/C recognition but this one has me stumped. Only thing I can think of is a Merlin.

Dunno, Festwerfer, I didn't see it. It wasn't something Russian, by any chance? A Mil-8?

Sounds like the one we watched doing a few practice landings on the LGI - wasn't one of the usual 'forces copters, they appear and drop out of the sky onto the roof - no mucking about with them! This one was pussy-footing around for some time.

You're not wrong there - we were near the Town Hall when an RAF Search and Rescue helicopter came in, low over the rooftops, straight down and off again within a couple of minutes. Impressive to watch.

Agree with Festwerfer, the new Merlin fits the description of " Puma on Steroids". Heard it but didn't see it so cannot offer an opinion.

I saw this helicoptor on the day and all i can say is it was pretty loud,no exposed undercarriage and was fairly sleek looking but still quite large.didnt get a good look because of the low cloud but it was pretty much over my house. If anyone has any pics of the suggested copters then post em up and ill see if i can recognise it,no promises though.
