SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

As a balance to the LCT thread, there were many other companies who ran regularly into Leeds. The common ones were Yorkshire Woollen, West Riding, West Yorkshire, Hebble, Bradford City Transport, Ledgards. But did Farsley Omnibus run into Leeds at any time? I know they ran into Pudsey, and obviously Rodley, Farsley and Rawdon - I went to tech at Pudsey and used to see them. There was also the Kippax Omnibus Comany - presumably they ran into Leeds from Allerton Bywater, Kippax and Garforth. Both of them belonged to Wallace Arnold at the time when I knew them - early sixities. Any other memories.

What was the company with the blue bussed that ran into Wellington St bus station [I don't think it was Ledgards], my dad always called them "easterlies".

I remember the Red West Yorkshire Busses, faster and warmer than Leeds Busses, the much more comfortable Blue East Yorkshire busses (Both Vicar Lane station) and the darker green West Riding busses (Out of Sovereign Street?)which you could be sure would break down!

The East Yorkshires were low bridge double deckers, with the aisle at the side upstairs and a bank of 4 seats with reduce headroom over the seats. I used to get them from Leeds to Doncaster, via Castleford and Pontefract , 2 or 3 times a year. Thought the blue livery was great.

There was SYT (South Yorkshire Transport) who ran blue and white buses from Doncaster via Pontefract and Glasshoughton into the Central Bus station on the 410 route - the route still exists but is run by Arriva now.Relatively recently (late 90's / early noughties) Taylors Buses were running a single service from Seacroft into Leeds (29?), although they were swallowed up by Arriva and that route stopped pretty quickly.

Those Taylors buses were great! It was at the time one of the few companies that have a lot of female drivers in comparison to other companies. There was also a guy that looked the spitting image of Norman Wisdom who always used to drop my grandparents off near their street rather than let them walk the extra 600 yards or so from the bus stop!

My dad was a big fans of the Taylors buses too, primarily because they allowed smoking long after First had banned it!

Did you ever travel on them Wiggy?Being "foreigners" the solitary E Yorks bus was always parked "in quarantine" at the far edge of the Eastgate bus station on a tiny stand nearest Quarry Hill Flats. ( not quite the end of the Earth but you could see it from there!!) I always travelled on the top deck, front seat if possible, 4 abreast , with a panoramic view.Its a digression but the the main bus station in Valetta , Malta, reminds me a bit of Eastgate in that the platforms are all curved and the buses are all old british single deckers, museum pieces from the 50s & 60s.
