Leeds trolley buses set to get the go ahead!

Footnote I saw on the news last night thatEDINBURGH has got the go ahead to installa new TRAMWAY system!!!Why not LEEDS? GRRRR!Even there,some stick in the muds wereobjecting saying the electric posts andtrolley wires would spoil the view down Pricess St!Probably improve it!!!Awa' the noo,yer Sassenach!

First one must obtain/manufacture oxyhydrogen ( Brown's Gas ). The energy required to generate that gas always exceeds the energy released by combusting it. At all stages energy losses are inevitable. I'm afraid that ultimately it cannot be the panacea for all our problems unless a free/cheap and none-polluting primary fuel source can be found, leading us back to square one.

Google the Vauxhall AmperaThat is the (short to medium term) future. A small petrol generator running a full electric drive system with the equivalent of well over 100 mpg, in a 'normal' car that can also be plugged in to charge where available allowing full electric motoring when the generator only kicks in when the batteries need it.

The first tram line is almost complete and opens in 2012. There's been an awful lot of debate about it though, and as with the proposed Leeds network it doesn't really help the problems it is supposed to resolve. It connects the airport, the Gyle shopping centre, the city centre and Leith but doesn't do anything for the people who commute into the city every day from Fife and the surrounding areas.

Exactly the same as Leeds then. It is a well known fact that the route in Leeds is designed to service areas that are more likely to have people who do not have cars. Not areas more likely to serve commuters. What they fail to address is that the routes they have propoosed are very well served by busses already. Have they considered keeping a bus service and having a tram system just inthe 1 mile radius of the city centre and have all buses terminate at a tram stop?

According to Metro the chancellor said last night that the funding for the south entrance to the station would go ahead but he kept quiet on Trolleybus funding.http://www.wymetro.com/news/releases/101015 Metro are seeing this as a bad sign for Trolleybus but given most of us don't want it and that's before the council knocked 15% off its cost to governement (do it on the cheap?) are we happy

I too saw the Chancellor being interviewed at Leeds station. I thought it was a positive sign that he mentioned rail improvements and station improvements but no mention of trolleybuses. YIPEE!How anyone can -with a straight face - justify blowing two hundred million quid on a bendybus with overhead wires travelling on one route is beyond me. It was said it would create four thousand new jobs (yes in Germany making the overhead wire system).I notice bus route number 1 has gone back to double deckers from bendy buses. No doubt the fare evasion was a huge factor. If we ever need an alternative transport system surely it should be tram based and the Airport to Leeds route must be the obvious contender. It would only require a few miles of new track from the Airport to the rail line at Horsforth and then it could pick up at Horsforth, Ring Road, Headingley, Burley Park and Leeds.Incidentally, can any transport buffs on here tell me why monorails are never considered. Is it because they are no good or because the tram manufacturers have concillors all sewn up. I ask the question because once agin this year i was able to see the impressive monorail at Disneyworld Florida. For those who have not seen it, this is not a pleasure ride but a highly effective way of getting people between parks and out to car parks. It runs along at least two routes for several miles. When the park closes, it helps empty the park of tens of thousands of people within an hour, comparable to a city rush hour. Deployed in Leeds it could lift the commuter above our narrow streets, but it never seems to be considered.
