Was one of them built by Charles Roberts of Horbury Junction? And was the other ex Sunderland? No Trojan, not quite. The two purple ones which were brand new in 1953 were built at the famous Charles H. Roe of Crossgates, numbers 601/602. The bodies were identical, but there were mechanical differences for evaluation purposes. The ex Sunderland one, 600, was intended for all sorts of experimental use but, like the two new ones, sadly spent much of its life on the very short route 25 tio Hunslet. It must be the Blackpool Coronation Railcars that were built at Charles Roberts then. If memory serves they looked very similar to the Leeds ones, but I suppose it's because they were contemporary.

I have sent several of these over the years as birthday cards to interested folks.

What a shame that they were so unsuccessful - but the survivor has been meticulously renovated for preservation, so that's something to be thankful for.

I couldn't agree more Chameleon - another subject I know, so I won't "go on and on", but the abominable standard of design and manufacture of the much vaunted "beautiful new buses" has me baffled and upset. OK, ghastly bright interior colours in funereal purple and garish turquoise and bright lighting - BUT inadequate structure resulting in thumping and thudding and rattling when going over even a matchstick so to speak even after a few weeks in service. Rear suspension on these newer models (double deckers especially) is grossly inadequate for the job.To return to this topic though, providing the track was well maintained the trams gave a very acceptable ride, and models were being developed which had splendid comfortable seats - like the ex London "Felthams" for example - and four other ex London cars we had here - the three HR2 class trams (277/8/9) and the famous London number 1 (301 in Leeds). Acquisition of more HR2s was sadly scuttled by that little so and so with a moustache and slicked down black hair !!
