And was it really BA in 1978? As I say, I haven't checked, but would have said that by then it would be British Midland, who also used Viscounts.

I flew to Heathrow on 26-10-78. I was going to Italy on a visit to the factory of our major supplier with some customers. The firemen were on strike in Italy so we were flying to Nice with BA and then travelling by coach to Ferrara. My case was booked through. It was only when I arrived at Heathrow that I was advised by others of our party that the plans had been changed, we were now travelling to Pisa, (which was operated by the Italian Air Force and therefore not affected by the strike) panic - I had to get my case off the Nice plane and on to the Pisa plane. We flew out on a BA Trident, and back. It was the first time I'd flown by jet, and when we landed at Heathrow coming back, condensation formed on the metal air vents and it started gently raining inside the plane

The practice fire aircraft was originaly a Varsity. It could be seen from the Bayton Lane land. Which was owned by the golf course. Used to cycle up there a lot. When the runway was extended this area was taken over as it was always the emergency exit for Fire and Ambulance. For a short time the Varsity was replaced with a HS748. But not for long. I do seem to remember this being reported in the YEP.The airport built a viewing platform as some slight recompense for the loss of Bayton Lane.It lasted a few years but recent development and terrorists put paid to that too.BKS flew a fleet of Avro Vicounts from LBA for years. Dan-Air took them over and replaced them with BAC 1-11's. Both aircraft were successful exports, of which little is heard now.

BA's pull-out from LBA obviously later than I thought. Does that make me feel older, or younger?

I've no doubt that Avro would have loved to be credited with the design and production of a fine aircraft like the Viscount, but it was Vickers. Thanks for the reminder that BKS operated them - I tend to recall only Dakotas.
