There is a report on page 15 of the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP) today (August 2 2013) relating to Kirkgate Market and the planned Victoria Gate project, the latter of which will include a multi-storey car park to replace Millgarth police station. In the YEP report it states "an update report about the project has revealed that it will eventually include a 53 metre 'tunnel' through the proposed car park to accommodate the city's as yet unbuilt trolley-bus". As 53 metres is only a short length I'm unsure exactly what is being implied but I wonder if it means a short exposed 'tunnel' for a spur off the proposed trolleybus route coming off that route from somewhere (possibly the Brewery Wharf area). I may of course be totally misinterpreting what it means.

If you scroll down to Millgarth Police station here I think you will get the answer Leo.http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... =0﮷I doubt it will be a true underground tunnel as we think of it, more likely it will go through the new car park just as Millgarth Police station straddles the Meanwood beck.

On page 37 of today's (Sept 18 2013) YEP there is a full page 'Notice of Applications for an Order, Listed Building Consents and Conservation Area Consents' that lists the proposed work, such as demolitions, relating to the Trolley Bus Scheme. In the long list there is for example 'Ruinous lodge to north east of 35 Headingley Lane. Demolition of ruined structure' and '31 Headingley Lane. Demolition of gatehouse building' and 'The old coach house to north of Leeds Girls' High School. Demolition of north-eastern part of building and curtilage' (I had to look curtilage up and found it means "an area attached to a dwelling house and forming one enclosure with it"). I don't know those buildings so I cannot comment on if they are worth saving. The list does however make interesting reading.

I've long since run out of degrees of amazement and frustration over these barmy schemes, proposed and supported by "head in the clouds" organisations who know nothing about the realities of provision and operation. We are still reeling from the incredible and expensive conversion of the perfectly satisfactory service 72 (Leeds - Stanningley - Bradford) from one person operated double deckers with plenty of seats to more frequent two person crewed articulated buses. The sole purpose of this nonsense was to "find somewhere" for the redundant "slugs" from York and elsewhere which were an embarrassment at only five or six years old in many cases. Admittedly it was FirstBus who sent them by low loader to County Durham to be expensively refurbished by a specialist firm (REFURBISHED !! at that young age !!) and no doubt paid a "consultant" to design their new "livery" which the public are only likely to really notice when the giant things cause traffic holdups, which they regularly do in our unsuitable streets. Now we read that Mr. Hetherington thinks that the trolleybuses will provide easier access to Headingley Stadium - how? - I'd like to know. As far as I can glean the route is no nearer the Stadium than the existing buses in Cardigan Road and Headingley Lane - and are the operators going to purchase, maintain and staff enough trolleybuses to heavily augment the service when there are matches - I think not.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
