For quite a few years as a kid (perhaps to 11?), we went to 'the dark side'Yes, Lancashire was the destination, Morecambe* to be precise.A bus from Stanley, through Rothwell to Leeds, then the train from there on.Leeds, Shipley, Bradford, Skipton, up to Settle Junction, & then off to the west.We used to terminate on Marine Road, at the station that is now the Tourist Information, & generally stay at a Guesthouse that was near the 'coach-station'The Midland Hotel always fascinated me, its style was just so out of place (didn't know the term 'Art-Deco' at the time)*We'll be there again next weekend, as I'm running a half-marathon there, & SWMBO has intimated that we might be stopping at that gorgeous (renovated & re-opened) Midland Hotel!!!!http://www.crossbayrun.org.uk/index.htm ... x.aspxThen a bit later (early teens) we'd go up to the Lake District, & stop just outside Keswick, in a rented house just off the A66, between Wallthwaite & Troutbeck. Those 2 places still hold attachments for me, & I try to get to Keswick (& surrounds) whenever I canMorecambe is visited on an irregular schedule to check out its redevelopment/sad decline (& the rebuilds of the Midland & Winter Gardens)

I never went on holiday to Morecambe, but I remember going for the day at Easter 1968. We went by that now extinct animal the British Rail Day Excursion. Now I'd been pretty interested in railways and trains as a kid but when I became a man I put away childish things and became interested in erm sex. However, this particular day I went to Morecambe with my girlfriend - the future Helen of Troy. And the excursion was pulled by a BR standard class 5 locomotive. I remarked to Helen that the excursion was steam hauled - and she more or less said "so what?" I didn't give it another thought until my interest in things steamy revived a few years later, and I realised just how unusual it was for a BR service to be steam hauled in 1968. It must have been one of the last, and apart from that remark I never gave it a thought

My first trip to the seaside was when i was eight it was to the Leeds School Childrens Holiday Camp at Silverdale.I remember going through Ilkley and seeing sheep for the first time to cut a long story short i was there for two days and did not like it.You see i had never been far from the streets of Hunslet so i thought i would walk home. The police found me after about three hours i had to stay there for twelve days untill we came home, to me it was like borstal.I know many children had a great time there but it was not for me my heart to was in the streets of my beloved Hunslet. I forgot to say we went by coach from an office near Mandela Gardens.

Incidentally the Russian courier on that tour had "helped herself" to two illicit days off in Folkestone - she should have accompanied the previous party all the way to Leeds, and travelled with us to Folkestone on our first day from the start. Now I wonder if we could prevail upopn you again to reproduce a picture for me as it belongs in this topic, about the tea stops at Gisburn on the way to Blackpool. Trojan has kindly outlined the procedure which should work, but still no joy. If you can kindly E Mail me - I've lost your E mail address - I will send it to you for the magic treatment.     The picture's on here Blakeyhttp://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messages.aspx ... ight=1I've just read the Wallace Arnold thread - obviously I'm starting to repeat myselft- old age creeping on Many thanks Trojan - I'd completely forgotten that I'd put that picture on before - well spotted !!

Just old and confused I guess ;-) Nowt wrong with your memory - its mine that's at fault. When I mentioned above that there was a pub/cafe on the right just before the Commercial I said it was the Royal Oak. I was wrong, it WAS the Coronation - the Royal Oak was yet another pub/coach cafe further along and near to Mellor Brook and the English Electric airfield/factory at Salmesbury. Eeeh, old age eh ??

Eeeh, old age eh ??     The Yorkshire Woollen halfway house was a pub on the outskirts of Burnley, I'm not certain of the name but "The Five Lane Ends" comes to mind. It was a huge nissen hut in the pub car park. I had my first packet of "Nibits" there. They were a savoury snack made in Gildersome actually. In those days savoury snacks, apart from normal flavour, blue salt packet crisps were very unusual.

Trojan asked:Funnily enough I once went on holiday (which I omitted from my post) with a friend and his parents via Hull to Hornsea by train - the line's long gone. I wondered how you got to Brid by train - presumably via Hull, or can you also go via Scarborough? The "direct" line from Leeds to Bridlington was via Selby, Market Weighton & Driffield. It seemed to take ages.
