Got some funny looks from a couple of blokes sat in a 4x4. That must have been a while ago, as the two bits of the road aren't shown as linked on maps now. There's always someone up there in a 4x4 though. No, it was just last year, I think, Simon. We are talking about the same bit of road, aren't we? Coming from Carlton, turn right at the first big left curve, and then immediate left. The track runs between the field wall on the right, and bushes on the left. The bollards are at the far end, presumably near where people park to watch the planes and have an ice-cream. Going by your profile, you live very near there.

They put the bollards in to stop the boy racers flying round and to stop dodgy deals going in the blind spot there. Most of the car parks around there and the chevin have been mentioned re " woof woof" if you get my drift. I think most contryside areas attract that beacuse of their isolation. On a serious note what people do in the dark in the early hours is not my business. However, i do get peed off when it goes on in broad daylight in parks etc where families and children are ..Rant over

There are only 10 types of people in the world -those who understand binary, and those that don't.

It's commonly used as a viewing platform, and before the road was realigned around the end of the runway was a through road, but the bollards have been there for the five years that I've been there. My 1979 OS map shows a very different layout to today, with a road linking to Harrogate Road where the end of the runway is and looping around the cemetery to come out on Haw Lane, which was the corner that you mention. I'm sure someone will know when the new road was built.

Going back to when I was a kid living up near the airport..Yeadon Aerodrome as it was then, I am pretty sure that the aircfaft we are talking about was an old Bristol 170 series Freighter (the 'Biffo'). These flew regularly to the Channel Islands I believe carrying up to three cars...it ended its days being used for fire practice. This thread brought back a few memories of the airfield and the associated factory over the road. A pal of mine's mother used to work there during the war repairing damaged aircraft. Can't remember much about other aircraft using the airfield apart from DC3s, a couple of Chipmunks and the De Havilland Doves.A double fence went round the southern end of the main runway and we used to call it the Birdcage Walk..all there was between you and the control tower and runway was a chest high chain link fence !...how things change.

The aircraft was a Vickers Varsity T1, a ex R.A.F. training aircraft. Serial no XL765
