Swell of support for Leeds underground plea A call by a Leeds MP for Leeds to develop an underground rail system has received a massive swell of support from YEP readers.Earlier this week, Leeds East Labour MP George Mudie criticised city chiefs’ plans for a new trolleybus system, branding it “unambitious”.More herehttp://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/lat ... -1-5016255

Unfortunately the Telegraph is promoting the cause http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/ret ... =2368960Go to number 20 if it doesn't open on that. Found it courtesy of a tewwt by Metro surprise surprise telegraph wrote: Investment tip Areas set to have improved transport are Bodington, Holt Park, Stourton and Quarry Hill. 5% by late 2014 supposedly. Incidentally Boddiington Hall residences is now officially for sale with pre gained planning permission for just over 150 houses.

If he carries on at this pace I might get a reply to the email I sent him about the fire station closures last year.... The Civil Service wallahs who work there can't walk over the road into town - they already have a dedicated shuttle bus to take them to the station....I wouldn't be surprised to hear they're reopening Marsh Lane station just for them, with a tunnel direct from the Quarry House basement.

He might have a point, the mess and time it took to improve Kirkstall Road was pathetic. The population is growing all the time so it takes longer to get around Leeds. The infrastructure of the road system on Leeds main corridors has remained poor. If Leeds has the second largest City population in the Uk it certainly has been left behind in public transports terms.
Is it me or has Leeds gone mad

Being a cynical old bod ( 46 tomorrow!) I firmly believ that for some years, the council in all its guises has deliberately tried to put off car owners from driving into Leeds despite no real improvement in public transport for the last 30 odd years.I remember the bus lane on the A660 and then on Kirkstall road.Horsforth station near me has had no real improvement in years.Like it or not, the car is the most flexible and economic mode of transport for most of us.We get screwed on fuel tax and road tax without seeing any major benefit. No government of any partyhas invested in the roads in Leeds or the uk for years.4 hours out of 24 is where the real problems are.

In a report on page 2 of the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP) today (Oct 27 2012) it states "Leeds £250m proposed trollybus system is facing a £20m funding gap...Council and Metro officials say they are trying to find extra sources of funding for the project, which was given the green light in July". This is the link to the YEP online report:- http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... -1-5070426

I have never seen an organisation as blatantly incompetent and unfit for purpose as Metro.

If I had my way, based on practicalities and a vested interest as a Headingley resident, the scheme would have a shortfall of precisely £250 million !! and, as Mrs. Slocombe used to say, "I am unanimous in that."I'm looking forward to Monday to see the inevitable carnage in Eastgate and the Headrow when this other latest scheme with the illustrated and expensively painted two person crew "standee" monstrosities replace 100 years of perfectly satisfactory interurban transport between Leeds and Bradford on the 72. Some good entertainment should be available opposite the former Lewiss's, with two or three of these efforts, a couple of 49s and 50s, and other assorted services tangled up with the infernal concrete flower pots on the decorative "chicane" which purports to be a main city thoroughfare. I said "Monday" because I imagine that they'll get away with a reasonable performance on the first day, Sunday.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

The transport system is now perfectly borked in the middle, where is happens to be the place where everyone goes to, or leaves from.If you live anywhere on the South of Leeds, and work anywhere north of city square, getting in is fine, but try getting back the other way.Now try do the same by bicycle, don't make me laugh - you can get from South to North readily enough, but the other way? This is supposed to be a city that markets itself on cycle friendly. Hmmpph. If you live out toward Rothwell or beyond, the roads are a mess for all modes of transport, including public transport - but for cyclists those roads are a special problem - the dual roundabout just past Stourton are not at all funny. If you want to go East, the only option is something along the lines of York Road - try that on a bicycle if you dare. Stoney Rock lane is fun when juggling with buses, and school run traffic where absolutely nobody is actually paying any attention to where they are going and have no awareness of what is happening around them - with their earbouds and ipods busy erasing their minds of survival instincts whilst road crossing, and it gets alarming when the car drivers are doing the same.I am only glad I don't have to go anywhere near Roseville road/Roundhay road/Sheepscar, but these areas have long been a traffic disaster zone, it will take some imagination to make them worse but I am not underestimating the ability of the town planners. All we need now is someone to **** it all up more by putting trolley buses with reserved road space to connect places such as Middleton with the centre.Equal opportunities traffic standstill for all parts of Leeds, rich or poor. The best option for everyone is to live in Woodlesford and get the train in.
