drapesy wrote: Yes there was definitely a small subway from one side of Briggate to the other when I was a kid. It was near the junction with Boar Lane and went from near the Arcade on S.side of Woolworths to near the Stylo shop / now Macdonalds. Definately - I can remember it. Weren't there public toilets in the subway as well - or am I thinking of the subway at the side of the Merrion Centre that isn't there anymore either?

I've got a picture of the subway/toilets opposite the arcade a little further up briggate from the 1950's with trams still going-but the bus crash pic is from 1964 & it says it was used to build it???? I'll dig the pic out tommorow..

Can't remember any bogs in the Briggate subway or the Merrion Centre subway. Maybe the ones under Leeds City Station?

The crane it says was used building a subway on the corner of Briggate/Boar lane in 1964. Unless i'm mistaken then the dark building on the corner is now Mcdonalds & the crane is roughly where the Whip is. Correct me if i'm wrong but i can't remember a subway there. There was some undergroung toilets a bit further up Briggate. Does anybody know anything about the subway? Macdonalds is actualy the saxon shoes building just behind the bus, the dark building is on the south side which i think is a sofa shop, the crane is outside what i always call the dark arcade. I remember the underground toilets very well, they were filled in around the time of this picture though.

Ok Pete. I get my bearings now. I just don't understand the pic is dated 29th dec 1965 & it says the crane was used to excavate the subway (when it was already there) It must be a wrong caption & they were probably filling it in. I'd love to see whats under city square. The old toilets are supposed to be there fully intact, Just covered over in the 60's. Have you had a look at some of the old busses in the flickr group yet? We could do with some more folks!! http://flickr.com/groups/leedscitytransport/

Thats more like it Pete! I'll have a good old look at them in a bit. It takes a while to get used to the flickr site but it's easy to use when you get used to it. If you have a free account you can only upload so many pics a month so don't go mad. You can add topics as well for nostalgia trips & usefull info/links e.t.c. I'll post a few good links later. If anyone else has an interest & wants to start a group regarding Leeds i'll help them start one up. What do the secret Leeds team think about using flickr as a tool for this site? Add some links to relevant groups e.t.c? I know there's a few already on there.

Well, we seem to be able to do pretty much what we want on this site at the moment... I would like to rewrite the 'Useful Links' page so that people can actually do more of their own research on their own. Any useful links that people out there would like to suggest?

Yeah we have some good groups that get topics added to on here a lot. The railway group, Bus group & old leodis. If you use flickr as a tool to get some interaction going amongst groups. I.e walkabouts & topics/threads then research comes from that. Use the 2 sites together. Imagination & a google search engine are all you need to kick start stuff!
