Leeds lost locos

This could appear in another thread " Things you don't see any more" . As a kid in Leeds we always called road rollers steam rollers, even though by the 50's they were diesels. Anyway this is a genuine LCC steam roller bearing the Leeds coat of arms pictured outside a pub in Cheshire.

sorry blackprince,Hudswell clarke are long gone they use to be based in Jack lane at Hunslet but I believe they closed down in the late 1970s.

I have just had a look at the Hunslet engine Co website and they appear to be going strong. Interestingly they say they still service and own patents to Hudswell Clarke engines so i guess they just incorporated Hudswell Clarke.

And if you look at the buidlings opposite Costco you'll see more evidence of Leeds great engineering past.I've got a couple of pics somewhere of some more Fowler traction engines, taken a couple fo years ago at Nostell Priory. I'll dig them out and post them on the Secret Leeds group on flickr when I have a minutes.

Robert Hudson, who owned a huge foundry at Bruntcliffe had offices on Meadow Lane in the fifties. The produced railway wagons for the pits and latterly various adaptations of Fordson Tractors like the Shawnee Poole trailer and the Kiwi crane.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hudson_Ltd

I've uploaded a handful of photo's of Fowlers traction engines and road rollers onto the Secret Leeds flickr group.They were taken at the Nostell Priory Steam Fair a few years ago - a good day out if you get chance to go. This years event is on the 13th and 14th of June. Of course Leeds also has it's own Steam Fair at Temple Newsam in May.
