There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

There is a Sheffield edition of Look North as well as Leeds and Lincolnshire ones so it's possible that you might be seeing that.

Successive councils of both parties have consistently managed to keep Leeds' rates/poll tax/council tax etc down to a lower level than the other urban areas. The city now has a lower per capita and per property "take" than any other, and central government of both parties will claim behind the scenes that grants to Leeds will be supportive of such low local income from its population and thus be unfair to other areas with correspondingly higher local taxation. None of the main political parties in the city can afford to risk their vote by increasing council tax to catch up with the other areas - and, in any case, in a classic "catch 22" situation central government would almost certainly prevent them from doing so!I have no idea how this stalemate could be broken, but I believe it is very probable that it accounts for Leeds' appalling lack of major central investment in so many fields.Having created yet another urban myth I will retire gracefully to the sidelines and await the flak that will be inevitable for the propagation of such ideas, No flack from me jim.I believe that if we want the our home city to rival ,and if not exceed, those others in the north, then because we are seen as being "well off" then we will not recieve the same funding as other places, and therefore we must look at doing it for ourselves.I have said this before, and quite frankly if the citizens of Leeds could not afford perhaps a £20- £30 a year increase in council tax to fund new projects. However, this wont happen so pointless dreaming.Good link here, shows Leeds is 5.5% below the average in England for council tax at band D,interestinglt Manchester is 4.6% below as wellhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/o ... -authority

Interesting stuff cnosni. I wasn't aware of Manchester's position in the Council Tax league - and they will have a 60 mile tram system before long!

Remember though that Metrolink is not just financed by Manchester, but also by the other boroughs of Greater Manchester, and that Greater Manchester (and Lancashire) has a much better transport policy than West Yorkshire ever has, dating back to the 1950s. It's also why Manchester has the M60, cheap trains across a huge area and used to have night buses that went everywhere (that died with deregulation - there are still 20 or so bus companies in the area, which isn't necessarily good but is still better than just one).

There will be still a chance of stopping the NGT (No Good Transport) next March when a Transport & Works Order needs to be applied for, as there is opportunity to put objections to the T.W.O. If PlillD is right with his report that it will not go behind the Arndale Centre at Headingley, the scheme is useless and no better than Diesel Buses.Personnally I have not seen any information about the route behind the Arndale Centre being cancelled and would like to see where this has come from.
