This may cause some contraversy....(!)The "tram turning car park" at Roundhay apparently never had trams going to it at all. they had a spur that was between the Park gates on Princes Ave, and Lidgett Park Lane that allowed overtaking etc. If you look at the Soaper "leeds transport! books, this should confirm it.If this is indeed true it begs the question as to why there are the tram poles in the car park -cosmetic?

This came up way back in another thread and I was surprised - I always thought the trams used that area too but, we are told not.I think the explanation given for the poles was 'left overs'. Well maybe so.I wonder why there are islands built down each side, resemblng alighting areas, did buses use it later ?

The poles around the Roundhay 'car park' was part of a loading bay built at the time of 1953 [for the Military Tatoo marking the Queens Assession ] for the purposes of loading buses. There used to be feeder barriers for passengers to load up, but have long since gone. The Tatoo didn't finish until midnight so the buses were laid on to provide transport home direct to all parts of the city where the trams couldn't get to and of course all routes from Roundhay went to the city centre and then dispurse to the suburbs. The 'bus station was used on many occasions afterward . ie childrens day, printers sports, etc Tram poles were also used as street lighting poles on tram routes for which the lighting department paid a [pitance] rent for the upkeep of the lights above the catenary. Many have since said that this was another way to make the tramway department look un-profitable.It was also another way of keeping down the amount of, what we now call, street furniture. Pity some street department heads don't bang together these days.

Thanks railnut - makes sense and I think I remember the railings on the 'loading bays'. Off-road stops and parking for buses - now there's an idea that someone should take up to keep traffic moving

Some old track has been exposed at Oakwood, North of where the reserved track ended. This area is being converted to a car park, if you wish to see it you will have to be quick as it is due to be filled in.Can be viewed here under "Making Tracks"http://snipurl.com/f0hsm

Is anyone in the know about the Leeds tram liveries? What years they were carried by the trams e.t.c.I've been down to Crich for a project i'm working on about the Leeds trams. (Hopefully it will be ready at the end of the week)There is the older Yellow and brown/chocolate carried by 399 hereThere's the blue and cream (I seem to think was the livery before the trams went red)Thats carried on 345 herehttp://www.tramway.co.uk/images/345%20old.JPG(Although it looks a bit rough there-It's gleaming like a new pin these days)Then there's the last livery of Red and cream carried by 180 herehttp://www.tramway.co.uk/images/Tram%20Fleet/L ... 180.jpgAny help would be great.I'm sure i'll have a few more puzzles to ask too.Cheers guys!
