I's just a bit of a clearing in the wood east side of temple newsam.Waterloo Colliery was the coal seam/mine underneath the Pontefract lane area and as has been set out above there were many pits sunk onto the seams in various places. If you go on old maps you can pick them out over the years. The sites of many old Leeds mines are traceable but most have been cleared up, buildings knocked down, spoil heaps removed, etc etc.The West Yorkshire Colliery has about the best remains, in Austhorpe.Bits and pieces are traceable in the rest of leeds, like the line of tramways, spoil retaining walls, spoil heaps big (York Road) and small (barnbow) and the odd colliery building retained for other uses (garforth). Often the site may be a gap between houses (crossgates) or just a small mound (Horsforth).
