I sometimes despair of what has become of our once great nation. The Met Office website has issued a flash severe weather warning "for Yorkshire and the Humber*" as there might be 2cm to 5cm of snow tomorrow and temperatures might drop as low as -2 degrees C tonight.Less than an inch of snow and temperatures just below freezing, in November? Goodness me! That would have barely rated a mention from Bob Rust in days gone by. What have we become?* - "Yorkshire and The Humber" is an EU administrative zone, foisted on us without discussion which has suddenly found it's way into everyday use and into all sorts of aspects of our daily lives.

What I'd like to know is what has changed peoples minds re Global Warming? We are now being told that the colder winters are attributed to Global Warming! Yet, only a couple of years ago when the winters were milder we were again told it was Global Warming that was causing it! When are these people going to realise we are not stupid and some of us can't be conned by their glib answers and they can't have it both ways!

I can agree that 2 - 5cm of snow is hardly severe. Have we all gone soft? Mind you, that amount falling south of Watford is enough to bring the whole metropolis to a halt.I think they're still living down when they failed to forecast the hurricane that hit southern England years back.
I like work. I can watch it for hours.

I think that the situation is that historically our weather has been held at an unusually low level of maximum and minimum variation by the Gulf Stream, having regard to our latitude. Global warming upsets the Gulf Stream, destroying our protection, and our weather becomes more typical of our latitude, hence wider than expected temperature variations, especially in the winter months. "Global", as the word implies, means worldwide, and refers to the mean average everywhere. It also means that only one or two degrees of difference of that worldwide temperature figure is sufficient to upset localised conditions, such as the Gulf Stream, hence the unexpected effects on the UK.
