It has recently had a lot of work done on it, and all the mud/fencing has just been tidied up.The aircraft in the woods was ( I think) either a Hawker Sidley 748 or possibly even part of an old Bristol, I can see it in my minds eye, just can't think of the model. It was there until the late 70s, and may have been there in 84' when i was on a YTS scheme at what was " Northair" ( Now Multiflight).I park up at the bomb hole with my 4 year old to watch the planes and am an owner and a massive Landrover fan myself but having seen some of the off road driving from 4 X 4 owners and quad / scrambler bikes, it's only a matter of time before someone is injured or killed up there then it will get fenced off and we will lose it.     It's already restricted to authorised vehicles only! has been since security was beefed up during the terror attacks. I was lead to believe that you will be told ONCE only to leave a second time will mean the loss of your vehicle! Think it comes under the law of driving your vehicle other than on the highway! I remember the aircraft carcas when i was a kid in the 80s was told it was an actual crashed aircraft that was left in situ to practice on! It was taken away when they had a purpose built 'fire ground' built on the far side of the main runway! but i could be mistaken!!!

Hi Rangie, nice to find another Lode Lane fan on here. I thought it was as well, but a number of people seem to tear round the place mucking it all up.I think you are right re the plane being used for fire practise, but i think it was dragged there rather than crashed there. We need to find somone old enough to remember. My dad would have remembered but he passed away in 91.

Me and our lass were up there on Sunday eating our 'murghy's' fish and chip's.The security guy's drove up with there flashing yellow lights, stopped, stared over at us for a few seconds then drove off?I must admit though its starting to look a little bit scruffy up there what with the mess thanks to the fly tipping morons!ps/no sign of any old fuselage though lol
There are only 10 types of people in the world -those who understand binary, and those that don't.

It didn't crash there it was put there, however a plane did crash on the cemetery at Yeadon, late '60s I think.

Wonderful cover for any real subterfuge!

Me too!!!!!!I've had a 110 'Heritage' (Td5 engined) since December 2005, Before that I had a Discovery '50th Anniversary'Which was preceded by a 90CSW-V8 (genuine factory build!), a 110 Hard-Top (300Tdi) & a 1969 2A Light-Weight.I still regret not buying a 101FC I was offered with a 300Tdi conversion (or the Range Rover 'softdash' 300Tdi manual)

Rich, no you are deff not going mad. I bumped into an old friend tonight whose dad used to work for Dan-Air and he seemed to think that it was either a DC-3 or a HS 748.I've heard about Flappits on the LR UK forum, sounds like mad max. Suggest we have a meet up at the "bomb hole", at least we know where it is!.

I think there must be a boundary for the patrolled area as the bomb hole is marked on some maps as a viewing point for the airport. What makes things a bit more difficult is the network of footpaths across and around it: there's one that's accessed from an entrance behind the Stoops and seems to cross the small patch of marshland there and through the field between that and the bomb hole with a stile practically next to the perimeter fence. The security types are a private company and probably don't have any jurisdiction to anything there as the land probably doesn't belong to the airport or indeed Yorkshire Water, which is why it's still open. The police do occasionally make an appearance at the other viewing point at the end of the runway, which I think is 'public' property, being part of the old road.

An older (but not ancient!) OS map shows a public footpath through that area which actualy goes round the whole of the southern edge of the airport before drifting away to the east.

There was an article in the YEP some weeks ago on the subject of ownership and it seems that there is mixed ownership, some of eth land is owned by Leeds City Council & some by a private landowner.I would hate to have to sort that one out. There seems to be a number of people in 4 X 4s pretending to be security guards in public areas, must be an ego thing...
