Gelderd Road.....Dangerous?????

I have been traveling from my work in Gildersome to home for almost 2 years now. This commute takes me down Gelderd Road from the Gildersome Arms down to the Wheatsheaf. I have come to the conclusion, & would like other peoples opinions, that this road is bloody dangerous. You get some right nutters driving towards you at must be close to 70mph on the part where the road splits into two lanes, coming upwards, for people to over take. Its not long since that i thought i was a gona when a Toyota Celica lost its back end coming up round the bend.

i agree with you on this. i find many a motorbike, speeding off up the hill at way too fast speed's, known of a fair few accidents there too

It used to be a helluva a lot more dangerous when it was a three lane road with no speed limit from Gildersome Cross Roads to the Wheatsheaf. Having said that there wasn't as much traffic as there is today. I worked on Gelderd Roat at Gildersome for 5 years and getting out of Levertons (Finnings) at peak times was a problem most days.

You're right Magic - 'tis dangerous that road now I think about it. It scared me to death when I first moved to Gildersome about 15 years ago but you get used to it.Its a long steep stretch of road that has no other main roads coming into it from Gildersome Arms right down to the Wheatsheaf, so people just go crazy. Seeing as Morley is now bristling with speed cameras I am suprised that there arn't any sprouting up on this road.Being upstairs at the front on a double decker bus while it is tonking down Gelderd Road is the closest I've been to a rollercoaster ride for quite a while. I'll have to remind myself that this is not necessarily a good thing, I might end up flying out the window like superwoman if we hit anything

Gawd yes, that bus ride used to terrify me, particularly at that bend to the right where the white farmhouse is.

There is no such thing as a dangerous road - it might be made dangerous by the actions of those driving on it, but the road itself isn't dangerous.It's an unfortunate symptom of the times we live in, with too many poor drivers (some insured, some not) feeling that they can charge around with impunity and that everyone else is holding them up. Then there are those who simply can't drive to anything like the required standard.Speed cameras aren't the answer - all they do is ensure that the law abiding obey the speed limit as they pass them. Those driving illegally aren't affected as in most cases the vehicle isn't registered to them with DVLA so there is no punishment. The same with ANPR cameras - the scumbags know where they are, so just avoid them.Think on - when was the last time you saw a traffic copper? They don't exist off the motorway network anymore.

I don't mean this in a sadistic way in that anyone should suffer - but there is a lot to be learnt from having an accident - then the reality of what you do, the time it tkes to stop, the extent of the damage half a tonne of metal moving at even 30 mph ( think of that as as 44 feet in the time in takes your watch to click over one second) does when it hits something starts to dawn - sadly though, often forgotten by the untouchables.
