Which do we think was the first proper supermarket (ie reasonably large,self-service) in Leeds? I remember going in early sixties to the Fine Fare supermarket on Kirkstall Road, where the Hire Centre is now. There was also Hilton's on Horsforth Town Street. I'm sure others can go back further than me though.

I think Grandways were first at New York Road in 1961 then Fine Fare at Austhorpe Road in 1962 & the Queens came later if I have read the Asda history correctlyhttp://www.asdamediacentre.co.uk/about-asda/asda-history

Possibly this thread. http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... eadID=3651 I thought it had been discussed before. The first in Morley was Coopers (later Fine-Fare) in what had been "The Picture House" on Queen Street. The Fine-Fare in Pudsey and in Ossett were also both on the premises of former cinemas. Presumably a sign of the times, the cinemas were dying and the supermarkets were starting to thrive. Two of Morley's subsequent supermarkets were on former Methodist premises - also a sign of the times?
