I took this photo today (July 5 2012) when this girder caught my eye when I was walking around the area next to the River Aire near Leeds Station. As can be seen it is very overgrown where the girder is and it was impossible to readily make out what the girder might have crossed over. I had thought of asking SL if anyone knew but (as will be seen in the 1850 map in my next post) I now think it is where the River Aire once ran under the station to what is now the Canal Basin area. On enlarging the photo it seems as if there is some brick work on the right that runs in the opposite direction to the girder and so supporting that the girder may have crossed over that area when the river ran under the station there. I presume the channel is now blocked off there (as it is at Canal Basin) but I wonder if it has not been filled in and so is still there underground. The photo was taken near where there are barriers to cars to and from the car park. The very overgrown area has some colourful plants.

This is the 1850 1:1056 map taken from the Old-Maps UK website. The girder in the photo may have crossed where the River Aire begins to run under the station next to the "Clearing Office" and coming out at what is now Canal Basin (I can only make out "Basin" in the name on the map).

And finally this a view from the opposite side of the River Aire showing the area where the girder is on the other side. The riverside plant growth is too dense to see if there is an old channel running off.

The area has certainly become very overgrown since the photo you took on September 13, 2010!

It's the monkpit lock from the river to the canal. If you could see in there's a sort of ramp on the inside. My thoughts are that the beam was for hauling barges in the opening. there's a fence with a locked gate across the entrance.

It was just as overgrown then Leo, you had to be careful to get to the point where you can see the hidden arch.

Put a date in your diary to have a look in winter when the plants have died back.
