Has anyone got an old map of the Mabgate area to help solve this question i have pls?I'm interested to find out what mill (or industrial building) stood where i've marked goit on the aerial image here. The beck runs underground at that point. I've marked in blue where the beck runs in the open either side of the underground section, the underground section is marked in white. You can see the beck does a sharp 90 degree turn right for a short distance, then another 90 degree turn left to run under ground. An offshoot type chamber/goit is marked in white, a smaller feed ran into it from the Stoney rock direction. You can see the area in question on our video if you zoom to 04.40 mins herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cecu5kyUf2MIt would be interesting to find out what it was about in the olden days. All help is much appreciated.Cheers

I'll add this bigger view for more clarity.

Sorry that I can't help you here Phill but I hope you find some information. It is intriguing that the beck turns so sharply. That may suggest there was something there that was considered worthy enough to divert the beck rather than remove whatever was there at the time of the construction of the channel for the beck. I wonder if the beck ever connected with the goit you mention?

Yeah i'm just wondering about the sharp turn. The channel and the course it ran is positively ancient. A good view is hereIt's interesting to see the beck hadn't appeared to have run straight on for a very long time. I'm guessing that channel is Victorian era, and the original culvert channel?

I know the sewer feed you mean Cardiarms. That's in the open section (only just) before the sharp curves. You can catch a glimpse of it on our video. It's not the underground section. That's definetely some mill feed/goit.

It looks like Byron St Mill over that area, but no particular building. however the maps 1850s to 1908 all show a kink in Mabgate at about that point. The map below is the 1894 one. On the whole the buildings around there are the same for the other maps

Hi Phill. Having finally checked the maps available to me the following may be of interest.Netlam and Francis Giles' map of 1815 shows that the area delineated by the dog leg and the twin goits was then a mill pond. A little further south was a short branch running north-east.Rapkins map of 1850 shows the pond filled in, but with another branch running east, then north, on the site of the pond. There is a flax mill on the west side of Mabgate, and another to its east. From that area an apparent water course runs in a generally easterly direction to the junction of Accommodation Street ( the present day Lincoln Green Road ) and Beckett Street. A branch of this water course runs in a southerly direction, parallel with Beckett Street. A short section of the water course appears on the 1815 map, but the map stops before it can help us!I cannot see from the maps if or how the watercourse was linked with the beck and/or its branches, but it may have some connection with the mills or some such. There is a caveat, in that I have found Rapkins map to be inaccurate in various areas in the past, but usually this is an accuracy of positioning rather than in what features are portrayed.Hope this is of interest.

Hi Jim.Thanks for taking your time to check things out, and going to the trouble of putting it on here for me. It really is good of you. I'll read and digest all that (and will use it when i get round to my project The mill pond sounds interesting, and a very plausible source for the goit. I need to get hold of some 1906 maps pronto methinks. It's high time i did. Cheers
