Hi Jogon. Check out the "Leeds Railway Station's Lost World" thread for lots of info on what still remains of the goit where access has been made by myself and various other contributors at one time or other. From my own excursions, I can say that the entrance to the goit from the upstream end was completely blanked off, probably around the date of your photos (c1899 I believe) but there are probable remnants under the Art Deco concourse. This area is not accessible by anyone other than the railway engineering departments and is very derelict, even dangerous. From there the goit would swing round under the bus and taxi roadway to the west of Bishopgate Street which I believe is part of the service areas for the Queens Hotel. The drop in level you mention is a necessary part of mill goit layout - mill wheels need "head" to work, especially those of the overshot variety. If I am remembering correctly there was more than one mill in the sequence down to the river outfall, and a considerable drop would be essential.

I think medieval timbers were found from dams and things.I guess there will be stuff awaiting to be found on what is the Soveriegn street car park? Maybe you won't have to wait too long to find out. Given the current collapse of the building trade, there are now plans afoot to turn the Soveriegn Street site (currently an open air car park) into a "city centre park". I think it's where the ill fated 'kissing towers' were going to go.There is a piece about it in tonights YEP http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... 957617.jpI wonder how far down they'll be digging? There is a report on pages 6 to 7 in the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP) today (June 29 2012) about property development plans at 3 sites in Leeds. One plan is about the old Queens Hall site on Sovereign Street of which the YEP states "The former tram depot was demolished in 1989 and replaced by a 'temporary' car park that is still there". The YEP reports that a plan was put forward in 2004 to develop the site as the Criterion Place (the 'kissing towers') but that bit the dust in 2008. The YEP states "Now one plot at Sovereign Street has been earmarked as a new four-story office building...The piece of land is bounded by Pitt Row and Sovereign Street, says a council report on the scheme...As previously reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, council bosses have also said they want to transform part of Sovereign Street into a public park. They hope it will become a 21st century version of Park Square".If these schemes do go ahead then there will be changes to the area, so we will have to keep a watch out for anything interesting that may be revealed.

I really enjoyed this thread.Superb work from all.......Isle of Cynder????Cinders infilled many pits, holes, excavations, but the isle was created by digging channels around it so there's no question of infill.Fascinating conundrum. What also fascinates is when they "filled in" the channels, that would take a heck of a lot of filling in. Did they use cinders then??Are all the buildings in the areas built on cinder foundations?Puzzled of Cookridge.....
