Monk Bridge area, 1964, from Leodis, between the bend in river and the bend in the railway, foreground. Compare with map above. Whitehall Road runs across the bottom left corner, through the site.

I couldn't find anything on Leodis for Croft House or Wanstead House/Place. I don't know if Wanstead House still exists, but I'll scour the maps for you, Graham. However, I did find this picture of Hanover House, Hanover Street from 1959. It shows the home of James Kitson (of Monk Bridge Works.) He lived there from 1861 to 1870. It must have been a bit grander in those days!

Does anyone know if that is still there or at least on any map? This 1854 map shows the location of Wanstead House, on Burley Road. Unfortunately the house doesn't exist anymore, but I'll post a later map to show the site now, roughly opposite the junction with Talbot View.

Here's a Leodis picture looking south-east along Whitehall Road with Monk Bridge Works on either side. After being founded by Stephen Whitham (of Croft House, Burley) in 1851, it was taken over by James Kitson in 1854. His son, also James, later took over, and later in life became Baron Airedale and Leeds' first Lord Mayor. His house can be seen in my post, above. The works were taken over by Doncasters in 1953, closed in 2005 and demolished for redevelopment.
