The photo just before that of the map showing where the tunnel runs under Millgarth Police Station shows a side tunnel and in the photo's caption it states "Lots of various side passages run into the beck, some look more inviting to explore than others". The presence of such tunnels does sounds intriquing. I wonder where they go? It would be exciting if at least some led to something other than a drainage system!

Yep, I knew it was not just a legend! Perhaps the side tunnels there are used by Millgarth to dispose of unwelcome "guests".

I haven't posted on SL for a long time but wanted to say thanks to Phil D. for his brilliant work in this thread. Also to the regulars who have posted on the Coal Mining in East Leeds thread about the history of Wyke Beck. Brilliant stuff. This site is remarkable, I doubt any other city in the country has a resource like this.

This thread is huge, with all the original pictures it takes me 4 mins to download it.If anyone is interested I can save Phill D's OP as a PDF file and host it for viewing or downloading.Suitable acknowledgements will be added.

Sounds a good idea, but perhaps permission from Digger should be sought first.

This is what Phill was concerned about, which is why we asked people to reply in new messages rather than 'quote' So far nobody has - that would be a nightmare!!!
