I've just found this 1560 map of Leeds, It's more of a village than a City in those days really. It's interesting to see that North Street existed in some form as a continuation of Briggate at that early date. And that a bridge crossed the Sheepscar beck in the same place it does today. It's highly likely the bridge I've photographed could well be that very same bridge. It's amazing to think it could be at least 450 years old. That appears to have been the main road into Leeds from the North, the bridge at that time would have been a very important crossing point. It makes you think more about the history and importance of coaching Inns like the Eagle Tavern on North Street. Also of note is Newton beck, which today goes by the name of Gipton beck.I think that's a Mr Belles/Balles?? mills was situated along Newton beck too? *The full size map can be seen here http://tinyurl.com/p9p3jt6
