Not sure if this is relevant to this thread,just been reading a booklet called "A History of Cafes & Restaurants in Leeds". And This picture is on page 51.(The Thoresby Society).

This is the corner of the Royal Exchange Building at its boundary with Mill Hill Chapel. The BM shows on the 1908 map.

This Bench Mark (BM) caught my eye on February 23 2016. It is just on the Calls frontage of the 'The Old Brewery' building whose main front is on High Court Lane. I've now found a BM marked there on an 1891 map but I don't know if the BM there now is the original one.

This is a Bench Mark (BM) that I saw on February 23 2016. It is at the railway bridge across Crown Street where that joins the Calls. I am however having trouble finding when this BM may have been created as the oldest that I've found is on a 1954 map, but I wonder if the BM is much older?

Wasn't the railway built [from Marsh Lane to the New Station] in the late 1860's? If so, then this would make this local surveying BM. The closest Fundamental BM being at Wetherby, part of the Liverpool to Spurn Head leveling in the late 1850's The next nearest BM is just across the road and is from a slightly earlier local survey. Would that Exchange café restaurant door become the entrance to the basement Yates Wine Lodge ? it also had an entrance round the corner on Boar Lane. when I first went in Yates I seem to recall one was supposed to be 21 years old rather than the normal 18.

This is a Bench Mark (BM) that I already knew might be there after I had seen a BM there on an 1954 map in the Old Maps UK (OMUK) website, so it was not a chance sighting. The BM nevertheless was still hard to spot and I missed it on a first look and only saw it when I did a much closer look. The BM is on brickwork near the corner of the Chris Bell & Associates building on the row of old buildings next to the Tesco Express on King Lane near The Avenue. I took the photos on February 24 2016. The first shows the BM near the corner of the building and the second shows its general location. I decided to mention the BM to the members of staff at the building and they seemed genuinely interested to learn of its presence and what a BM was.

On looking at the OMUK website there are no buildings there on a 1921 map but the row of buildings are there on a 1934 map but a BM was not marked (the old Post Office is marked). The BM is though marked on a 1954 map as B.M. 396.56 (thus, at least then, a little under 397 feet above sea level if I understand the figures correctly).

Thanks liits for that interesting information. I also don't recall knowing of the "Liverpool to Spurn Head leveling in the late 1850's".
