While walking across Otley Bridge the other day, I noticed lots of padlocks attached to the wire mesh on the side of the walkway. There were over forty of them, fairly evenly spaced and mostly small, inexpensive ones. I've noticed this on other railings too.Is it some sort of good luck "tradition" like hammering coins into fallen tree trunks, or the workings of an obscure religious sect? Or are cyclists just good at losing their keys? Anyone else noticed this?

Thanks everyone. Nice to know the good people of Otley are keeping those Eastern European traditions alive!

sithe no fishing signs on the river at Otley are now also written in Polish to hopefully stop another Eastern Euro tradition.

Hopeless romantics...I think it's more a case of, "This is my space so hop it" (Rather like the Germans and sunloungers) lol.

I'd like to see the angry jilted fella trying to smash off his love padlock off with a crowbar in temper

I've never heard of love locks! (well apart from keeping locks of someones hair).
