This old road sign is at least 46 years old. There aren't many of them left around Leeds. It's known as a pre Worboys sign prior to the Worboys report of 1964. The system of British road signs was first developed around the turn of the twentieth century, but its most radical overhaul came between the Second World War and the Worboys Report of 1964. The system that was developed over that time is still in use today.I'll give you S.L detectives something to go at by guessing the location. Thousands of people pass it every day. It's very much in the heart of the City, and not an outlying area. Anyone spotted anymore of them? It would be good to list them all here before they go for good.

On the A58?There's the remains of one on Grove lane at the Headingley Lane end. Just the yellow panel now, someone nicked the white destination board a couple of years ago. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?client=sa ... 58,,0,1.48

What about the obelisk just by the old Kirkstall Forge entrance with distances to London and Edinburgh? There's also a black and white striped pole nearby at the junction of Commercial Road and Vesper Gate Drive which I'm guessing is from an old sign. On the left of the lamp post on Google Streetview here:http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UT ... 3,,0,11.37

I'm guessing it carried the street name.It still appears to have black out paint stripes on it.

On the subject of the Worboys Committee, there's a set of articles at http://www.cbrd.co.uk/histories/wartoworboys/. Interesting to find out that the little girl on the "beware of children" signs was based on a photo of Margaret Calvert who was one of the designers.

Not so much a "sign", but a very old post on Regent Street going into Leeds (on junction with Skinner Lane). Looks like a old pedstrian crossing? The Renault garage is of course no longer with us! However, the post can still be seen when you pass the spare land. I pass it on a daily basis.http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 5,,0,17.73
