Who was JJ Flitch?

It might help knowing where the stone is. However with very limited results google suggests John Jacob Flitch a leather merchant. Castleford connections and a death in Leeds in 1900 are also suggested although that would make him very old at death or not very old when the stone was laid

Ah, that would make things too easy! I think the stone says 1891, which would make sense in terms of his age.

The stone pictured is at The Woodhouse Community Centre, Woodhouse Street, Leeds LS6 2NY. It can be seen just behind the man in black in this picture:http://www.headingley.org/node/3130There is another stone next to it which reads:'Laid by Mrs. John R. Flitch in memory of her beloved parents, the late Mr. & Mrs. Jonathan Crawford'The building was originally a 'Wesleyan Methodist Sabbath School', but is now a community resource centre. http://www.oblongleeds.org.uk/

During 1956 and 1957, my classroom was situated in this building. From distant memory there were two or three classrooms there, plus a 'large' hall which was used for recreational purposes and school dinners. My teacher, for the two years, was Kenneth Lister, who was an absolute gentleman. My first year in the junior school (1955) was in a classroom in the main Quarry Mount Junior School building and the teacher was a Polish man called Novakowski.Ian
