This 'Lucas Parts Station' sign caught my eye today (September 25 2014) being just under the start of the railway bridge coming down Lower Briggate towards Leeds Bridge. It is unlikely to be old so it may not qualify for this thread, but I was unsure where to post this. I assume there used to be a Lucas car parts business there, possibly using space under the railway. There does not appear to be one there now so I would be grateful if anyone could say when there was.

Thanks jim and rikj .Interesting rikj that you mentioned the shutter as it was open when I was taking the photo and there looked to be interesting small arches inside so I thought I would take photos of those. However, in the short time that I took to take the photo of the sign the shutter came down so I could not take photos looking in there!

The Bridge Garage, Lower Briggate has very important connections with the early days of the Samuel Ledgard transport Empire, and also IIRC with the Barr family, later of Wallace Arnold fame. Its scarcely possible to believe that through that narrow doorway under the bridge charabancs could be taken in - even allowing for the modest dimensions of those vehicles a hundred years ago there can have been scarcely the thickness of a playing card to spare. Once inside, the vehicles were directed to whichever bay was required with the aid of the wooden turntable which survived until, I believe, the 1960s before being covered over.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I have driven up and down Hudson Road probably hundreds of timesbut have just noticed this, just higher up than the entrance to Burtons.Burton lorries were always immaculate, always clean,no dents etc. and the wheelswere always painted a silver colour. They were branded as High Street Transport at one time. This must have been the main entrance before using Torre Road.

There should be about 8 or 9 of them up Hudson Road.
