Hi Leo and Tasa, here is a shot I took of the Central Library pillar in 2013 but I have tried to capture this many times over the last few years. I found out about it whilst on a Heritage Open Day, in 2010 I think. The guide said it was the original sign, i.e. not re-painted, and was still valid in some respects until the late 80's early 90's. I believe foreign students still had to register there as aliens in the early 90's. The guide also said that they didn't think it was gold leaf but only gold paint. I think very few people ever notice it as it does not seem to catch the light very well and because of that you have to be actually looking at the pillar to see it.

Cheers for that information johnnyg.

Cheers for that information johnnyg. Thanks johnnyg from me as well - what an excellent photo! As you say, it must be difficult to see unless you know it's there. I visited the Library and Museum many times during my childhood as we lived across the road (East Parade) in the 1960s but I never noticed this sign (I was probably too short)

I hope they retain it with whatever development it is going to be.     Passed the Albion today, and the "Albion" and "Warrington and Burton Ales" signs have gone. They may be away for refurbishment, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope. Oh dear. Workmen are erecting new signage on the Albion fascia, and, contrary to the undertakings in the planning permission document (see PDF download, accessible from P44, 1 Oct 2013, posted by Tasa) the original tiled "Albion" and "Warrington and Burton Ales" signage has not been replaced. Instead there are (plastic?) gloss black boards with dayglo green stand-off letters proclaiming "Albion House" to the front and the company name (under the circumstances I will not give them publicity) to the side. Anyone up for the task of making formal representations on this subject? Not my forte I'm afraid.

A bit of Leeds garment trade heritage. On York Street just round the corner from St Peter's Square.Apologies if this pic has already been posted, I started looking through the thread to make sure, but as it goes back to 2007, I got a bit bog-eyed after a while!

This sign was uncovered a couple of years ago but has now been weathered away to reveal another saying 'Spencer' I think. I'll try to get a photo.http://www.leodis.org/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL
