Strange Pit in Hawksworth

Does anyone know what this pit was for? It is located in the Hawksworth Woods down by the beck, it looked like it was well fenced off at some point, the pit is about 3 or 4 feet deep judging from my window at work. I wondered if it was anything to do with the POW camp that used to be in this area. Have tried looking on Leodis to see what was there, but no joy.Here we are...

The woods contained a lot of Quarry works and railway works so I assume there may be a connection with that?Try maps from the 1920's and the woods are a hive of industry
