SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

Afternoon AllHave been following several of the threads in this section with interest as I am relatively new to Leeds. I work in Residence 6, the serviced apartments on City Square in the Old Post Office Building and would be very grateful if anyone could provide any information or pictures on its history as a Post Office and possible former Infrimary? I noticed that a lot of people were disappointed when it was converted from a PO and just wanted to say they have done a great job inside, the sympathetic renovation kept the old wrought iron roof beam etc and if anyone would like to see, just pop in and I'll happily show you round.CheersGraham

Thanks for the above, had had a quick look on Leodis but no joy with internal shots of what is now Loch Fyne and the RBG, the old working shots of the PO would be very interesting if anyone has any?

From what I can remember, the actualy interior of the Post Office (certainly the bit customers could access) was fairly uninspiring.It's a few years ago now, but all I can recall is typical 70's / 80's Post Office interior and you could have been in any building.

Does that explain, what I have always wondered about why Infirmary Street is so named. In a drawing on the Birthday special "what and where" Infirmary Street is at a much tighter angle to Park Row and may be pointing roughly to where the oldest part of the present infirmary is. However its still a long jump from the present city square.

Infirmary street is where the infirmary used to stand before it was closed and moved to its present location sometime 1869.http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/leeds/lo ... u5Wi55Look around halfway down on this webpage for a picture of it.There have been several infirmaries.The one on Infirmary Street - which is now the site of the Yorkshire Penny Bank, was the previous infirmary.However, the City Square site of the Post Office was the Coloured Cloth Hall.There was an even earlier Leeds Infirmary on Kirkgate opened 1768, but I do not know exactly where yet.

The Infirmary was at the rear of the mixed cloth hall court (1756-1890),the post office is situated on the site of the mixed cloth hall court,whos entrance overlooked what is now city square.
