In last nights YEP it was announced "Councillors" were backing a plan to demolish the Nave, and the Aisles on Mt St. Mary's to build yet more flats. All that will be left in laymans terms, will be the "Altar end" of the church. The presbytery is also to be demolished to build a 5 storey block of flats. These are all grade II listed buildings.Roman Catholics like my wife regard this a terrible sacriledge, she said the Catholics would sooner see it demolished completely rather than allow builders and landlords to mutilate their temple so they can speculate on it to make money.Wait a minute, heard that somewhere before ...

I think that is how the developers got planning passed - they put forward projected costs that showed if they kept the knave, etc, they'd make a loss on the project. Basically they told the council that if they didn't get planning permission as submitted they'd have to abandon the project, which would result in the continued decay of the structure which would mean demolishing it within the next few years.Personally I think the whole sorry situation has been a disaster from start to finish. The involvement of a string of shady characters previously and the subsequent stripping of lots of fixtures and fitting have left us with this mess now.

that's just the same in my eyes,as going to york and pulling down half the minster to make crappy flats, flats that will be homes for smack heads within 15 or 20 years.we have had more than our fair share of pony old dwellings in leeds,we don't need more...leek street, quarry hill, saxton gardens....councillers with any sense of civic duty.....TAKE NOTE!

The difference being the York Minster is a thriving church, with healthy congregations and the alway helpful tourist income.Mount St Marys only closed when the congregation fell to the point where it couldn't be sustained. Same as St Patricks not a million miles away which is now a furniture store for the Playhouse.Don't get me wrong, I'm as saddened by these plans as anyone on here and I'm not entirely sure what the demand for upscale expensive designer flats in the Richmond Hill / East End Park area is, but this seems to be the only offer on the table to at least retain part of the building.

the congregation fell when the mass of old back to backs on the bank and surrounding areas were pulled down, housing a vast catholic population.how healthy i wonder is the congregation of the parish church of st peter.anyway, the vatican should step in,even if just for posterity, there was a convent,a school and a cathedral sized church...it deserves saving.

There is a letter in tonights YEP on the subject which goes on to point out that there are abandoned mine workings under the site (apparently a large chunk of the school playground once vanished down one once upon a time). It goes on to speculate what effect the heavy machinery etc might have on this, especially whilst parts of the church are demolished to prepare for the flats. It finishes by echoing my earlier comments about what demand there is for (expensive) residential accomodation effectively within the grounds of a school...

There were rumours of tunnels under the school buildings to the church when I was there, many years ago!I think I have heard about mine workings in that area - don't know about the playground though.
